OS X Snow Leopard Says Goodbye to PowerPC?

Numerous sources (Engadget, Gizmodo, Mac Rumors) are reporting that the next version of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard, will drop support for the PowerPC architecture. A screenshot from the system requirements page of the developer preview seeded to developers this week at WWDC confirms this. What we don’t know is if the change is temporary or permanent.

Video: MarketWatch Interviews Mossberg After WWDC Keynote

The fine folks over at MarketWatch took a chance to interview everyone’s favorite journalist, Walt Mossberg after the WWDC keynote on Monday. He talks about some of the missing features still such as copy & paste and sending MMS messages. He won’t give us his final take until he reviews it though.

Apple posts stream of WWDC08 keynote

If you missed the exciting WWDC08 keynote yesterday, Apple has now posted both standard- and high-definition streams of the keynote which covers all the announcements made from MobileMe to the iPhone 3G. We’re kind of bummed that Apple had to edit out “It’s a Small World” from the keynote (after all, it is a Disney song, couldn’t Uncle Steve pull a few strings?) and Phil Schiller’s corny “ActiveStink” joke.

Find both streams here.

Apple posts info on 10.6 “Snow Leopard”

Apple has posted a quick overview of what’s to come in the next version of Mac OS X 10.6 dubbed “Snow Leopard.” Instead of focusing on new features, they’ll be focusing on security enhancements and stability. The only new “feature” is support for Microsoft Exchange out of the box.

An interesting note: “Snow Leopard dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos.”

Take a look for yourself at Apple’s website.

New Details on iPhone 3G Data Plans

After a little sneaking around AT&T’s corporate website, we discovered some new details on the new iPhone 3G data plans.

  • Unlimited data & email for consumers: $30/month
  • Unlimited data & corporate email for enterprise: $45/month

Also interesting is the “GPS-enabled YELLOWPAGES.COM mobile application” which we didn’t see today from Apple. Take a look at the PDF & webcast of the AT&T conference call here.

Update: It looks like current customers will continue paying the standard $20/month. “All iPhone 2G users will be grandfathered and won’t be required to pay more per month for as long as they choose to use the service, including past the end of their contract.”

Update x2: If you thought you wouldn’t have to activate your new iPhone 3G in an Apple Store, you will. According to the AT&T conference call, it’s the same process and the same procedure in both stores. (Editor’s Note: I miss the iTunes activation already!)
